Jigging for Salmon

This year we wanted to concentrate on jigging for salmon. I love fishing the open waters in the salt. Normally we are trolling and sometimes it gets very mundane. Jigging throughputs the angler into a very active mode and excited when there is a hookup.

The first step is to get a GPS depth sounder that is able to detect over 200 feet of depths. Then watch your fellow anglers and where the concentration of boats are. From past successful experiences or from other anglers you may have a heads up on the GPS location.

Once you locate the bait ball then it games on dropping the jigging lure to the bottom and then starts to bring it up after a few minutes. I like to bring the lure up in stages about 10 turns of the reel.

Not only salmon are hunting the bait balls but also other predators like cod, halibut, sharks. Some of my friends start at the top of the bait ball depth and then drop in stages.

This particular year we were under a catch and release regulation. We used single barbless hooks and were able to release these large salmon without lifting them into the boat

Success is to keep open-minded and try everything.
